Boat and RV Storage in Grand Rapids: What to Know Before You Store

June 29, 2026

What Grand Rapids area boat and RV owners need to know about finding the right storage facility for their vehicles.

Summer on the water in West Michigan is hard to beat. But when the season ends, or when you need somewhere to keep your boat or RV between trips, finding the right storage matters more than most people realize.

Not all storage is the same. The wrong setup can mean weather damage, difficult access, or surprises when you come back to pick up your vehicle months later. Here is what Grand Rapids area boat and RV owners should look for when choosing a storage facility.

What to Look for in Boat and RV Storage

Door height and unit size. Most standard storage units are too short for a boat on a trailer or a full size RV. You need tall doors and deep units. A 12x40 unit with an oversized door handles most trailered boats and Class C motorhomes comfortably. Measure your vehicle's total height on the trailer before you shop.

Enclosed vs. outdoor. Outdoor lots are cheaper, but in Michigan the trade off adds up fast. Rain, snow, ice, UV exposure, and wind driven debris take a toll on fiberglass, canvas covers, and paint. Enclosed drive up storage keeps your boat or RV protected from all of it.

Access and convenience. Look for a facility with drive up access so you can pull in and out without tight turns or multi point maneuvers. Having 24/7 access means you can pick up your boat early on a Saturday morning without waiting for office hours.

Security. A secure gate with keypad entry, good lighting, and camera coverage gives you peace of mind between visits. You want to know your vehicle is protected whether you visit weekly or store it for the full off season.

Why Enclosed Storage Matters in Michigan

West Michigan weather is beautiful in July and brutal in January. Between October and April, your boat or RV faces:

Snow and ice that accumulate on covers and seams, creating pressure and moisture intrusion. Freeze and thaw cycles that crack gel coat and stress seals. Wind that can shift tarps and expose surfaces. UV exposure that fades paint and degrades rubber seals, even in winter sun.

Enclosed storage eliminates these risks. A solid roof and walls keep your vehicle in the same condition you left it, whether you store for two weeks or two seasons.

Tips for Prepping Your Boat or RV for Storage

A few steps before you store make a big difference when you come back.

For boats: Clean and dry the hull. Drain all water lines and the bilge. Disconnect the battery and store it in a climate controlled space at home. Top off the fuel tank and add stabilizer to prevent condensation and gumming. Cover the engine and any exposed hardware.

For RVs: Clean the interior and remove all food. Drain and flush water tanks, then add antifreeze to plumbing lines if storing through winter. Check tire pressure and consider tire covers for UV protection. Disconnect propane and the house battery. Close all vents and windows tightly.

For both: Run the engine briefly before you store to circulate fluids. Take photos of the exterior before storage so you have a record of its condition. Write down any maintenance you want to handle before your next trip.
